Inspiration to keep moving…and losing weight!

I’ve just spent over 2 months in Canada, America and Iceland and I have come back 3kg/6lbs lighter. How did I do it?

I left work and started travelling about a year ago. In that time (and just previous to that), I had put on a bit of weight. It’s amazing how quickly it happens. A couple of drinks here, a cheesecake, chocolate, creamy salad dressings, root beer float, parmesan chips, Chinese buffet, steak. I’m sure you all know the story. Before you know it, you try on a pair of your favourite trousers and the zip doesn’t even go half way up.

So there I was, buying clothes that were a little looser and hating every minute of it.

I used to run…a lot. But nature decided that running wasn’t my thing and the doctor announced that I had severely damaged cartilage in both knees and I shouldn’t run, hike or climb. Great! So with a voracious appetite carried over from my childhood, the weight started piling on because I was naturally eating more than my body needed.

I knew I had to be more active but just didn’t know how, felt too lazy or didn’t think I had time.

When I was in Indianapolis, a friend of mine invited me to join her workout session with her personal trainer, Kitty Markusfeld. I must admit, I was a bit nervous. I am certainly not fit and wouldn’t last 5 minutes on a cross trainer.

I was so pleasantly surprised. Kitty was wonderful. Warm and welcoming, she quizzed me about my current fitness levels and paid me the most incredible compliment. ‘Do you work out because you’re in pretty good shape!’ I could have hugged her!!

Kitty spends time with her new clients and determines the person’s current fitness level, what exercises they are interested or not interested in doing and if they have any pre-existing medical conditions. After telling her about my dodgy knees, she gave me different exercises that wouldn’t put a strain on those joints.

She offers one-on-one sessions from her studio, ‘Fit Body Studio’ in Carmel, Indianapolis. Her first session is free and it gives you the chance to see if you’ll like working with her and if you enjoy the types of exercises she recommends. I’m almost sure you will.

“I have been in the fitness industry since I was 18, it has always been a passion of mine”, she says. “I started the business when I felt that my kids were a little older and I wanted something to work around my own hours.”

She’s certainly made it work for her.

The studio is made up of different rooms – there’s a floor workout room, a cardio room with treadmills, cross trainers and bikes and a ‘gym’ room with machines and other workout bits.

We had an hour session and I’ll be honest with you, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The exercises were all so different from what I’m accustomed to (but it HAS been a while since I was in a gym). For example, standing on half an inflated rubber ball while lifting weights, lifting and shaking heavy shipping ropes or lifting weights while standing on one leg or swinging around a giant rod. They were all so different, it made the workout more enjoyable.

We finished by doing some floor exercises. Some involved lying down and stretching with a small ball placed in the centre of my back. I loved it.

After this session, unfortunately I wasn’t able to return to Kitty for more workouts but I never forgot the feeling I had when I left her studio. The tingling, the feeling of tired muscles that I knew had just moved more than they had in years and best of all, the satisfaction of knowing I had worked towards a healthier being.

That’s what I learnt! I learnt that if I want to lose weight, I have to keep MOVING! I learnt that exercise doesn’t have to be boring repetitive classes. I learnt that fitness can be fun.

So because of my time spent with Kitty and because of how great I felt afterwards (okay, I admit it, my muscles were aching for days afterwards but it WAS great), I decided to make an effort to look after my body. Cutting back on the actual ‘amount’ I ate was a good start because I’m so used to eating huge portions. But the most important change was that I started MOVING. Most days I went for long walks and this coupled with eating less had the desired results. Sometimes all it takes is for someone inspirational to plant the seed and for me, that person was Kitty.
