My Experiences

An amazing list of the things I have experienced so far.

  • I have dived with sharks in the Red Sea and South Africa (white tips and ragged tooth)
  • I have been indoor skydiving
  • I have done a helicopter ride over Victoria Falls and down the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe
  • I have experienced carnival time in Germany (an experience not to be missed, I can assure you!!)
  • I have done numerous wild life drives in South Africa and been lucky enough to see elephants, cheetahs, buffalo, rhino, giraffe, various antelope, wild dogs, hyenas, among others and to witness lions having their lunch (not so lucky for the zebra involved)
  • I have dived with seals in the Farne Islands off the UK coast
  • I have flown in a glider
  • I have been on a husky dog sled ride in the snowy Alps
  • I have done a camel safari in Gambia through the bush, past the fish markets and onto the beach
  • I have walked the bridge alongside Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe to Zambia
  • I have abseiled (twice!) down the side of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa (Table Mountain is 1km high and the abseil is from the top down 102m)
  • I have visited Amsterdam
  • I have dived with manta rays in the Maldives
  • I have been clay pigeon shooting
  • I have driven down Lombard Drive in San Francisco and toured Alcatraz
  • I have seen what is left of the Berlin wall and had a first-hand account of some of the incredible history
  • I have been punting on the River Cam, Cambridge, England
  • I have dived the battleships of the German High Seas fleet in Scapa Flow north of Scotland
  • I have done a catamaran cruise in Cape Town harbour and watched the sun set while drinking champagne
  • I have seen the Pope in St Peters Basilica in the Vatican
  • I have ski’d in France
  • I have visited both Oxford and Cambridge, UK
  • I have dived with dolphins in the Red Sea
  • I have ridden an elephant through the bush in Zimbabwe and fed her afterwards
  • I have been taught some strange form of Egyptian dancing by the dive boat crew in the Red Sea
  • I have been on Cape Point, South Africa
  • I have lived in 4 countries (South Africa, England, Germany and Thailand)
  • I have spent time in the beautiful city of Budapest, seen inside its basilica, walked across the magnificent Chain Bridge
  • I have viewed the most incredible art collections in both the Uffizzi gallery and the Palace art gallery in Florence, i.e. Botticelli, Michaelangelo and Donatello to mention just a few
  • I have spent time (just over 5 hours) in a re-compression chamber for suspected “bends”. (okay so this wasn’t a wonderful experience but it was an experience nonetheless)
  • I have visited London, done all the sights
  • I have hiked in both the Lake and the Peak District in UK and both were stunning!
  • I have played paintball (if anyone tells you it doesn’t hurt, they are lying! But it was great fun…)
  • I have driven the Garden Route in South Africa from East London to Cape Town
  • I have hiked on Germany’s highest peak, Zugspitze
  • I have experienced the sites of the Eastern Transvaal in South Africa, i.e. God’s Window, 3 Sisters, Bourkes Luck Potholes, Pilgrims Rest along with various waterfalls
  • I have been white water rafting in Wales
  • I have done a night cruise on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe and seen hippos and crocodiles
  • I have spent the day canoeing down the River Lahn in Hessen, Germany
  • I have dived in the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the North Sea and snorkelled in the Gulf of Thailand
  • I have abseiled down Howick Falls, a 110m high waterfall just outside Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
  • I have run in the world famous JP Morgan Chase Run in Frankfurt, Germany
  • I have visited St Tropez and Monte Carlo
  • I have visited Edinburgh, Scotland
  • I have done a helicoper ride over Table Moutain and up the Cape coast
  • I have cruised on a barge through the Norfolk Broads in England
  • I have toured various vineyards in Cape Town’s wine region including Spier and Nederburg
  • I have seen the Colosseum in Rome
  • I have three tattoos
  • I have done a motorbike tour from Cavalaire to Grasse in France
  • I have seen the statue of David in Florence (well all 3 of them actually, 1 original and 2 copies)
  • I have dived the world famous Thistlegorm wreck (along with many others) in the Red Sea
  • I have visited Oslo, Norway and even seen the King on Christmas Day
  • I have had lessons on how to control a skidding car (now THAT was an experience!!!)
  • I have run my own business four times, (IT consultancy, Nutritional Advice and currently writing and teaching English)
  • I have visited Cologne, Germany and seen its beautiful cathedral
  • I have cross country ski’d in Norway
  • I have survived an earthquake (A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Germany on 14 February 2011, at 13:43 local time. The earthquake epicenter was at Nassau an der Lahn, 65 km (41 miles) WNW from Frankfurt am Main.)
  • I am a qualified Nutritional Advisor
  • I have been inside Istanbul’s Blue Mosque, Aya Sophia, Topkapi Palace and both the Grand and the Spice Bazaars
  • I visited the rebuilt city of Dresden and learnt not only about the damage a war can do but also how the people can pull together to rebuild a city
  • I have flown Business class in the huge ‘double decker’ Airbus A380
  • I have been for a ride in a Ferrari 308 (like Magum P.I.)
  • I have visited Yosemite National Park, hiked Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls
  • I have seen the tufas at Mono Lake
  • I have driven over the Tioga Pass road through Yosemite at 9945 ft / 3110 m
  • I have eaten crocodile, kudo, orynx, gnu, ox tongue, pig intestine, pig’s blood, chicken feet, grasshoppers, wood grubs, pig’s feet and sheep’s stomach and many more interesting things.
  • I have stayed at the Venetian and the Mirage in Las Vegas
  • I have seen the beautiful musical fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas
  • I have see Kà and Mystère by Cirque du Soleil
  • I have driven through Death Valley at 50 degrees – and survived
  • I have visited Alabama Hills where numerous westerns were filmed (and the first Iron Man movie)
  • I have visited the incredible “Valley of Fire” with its amazing red rocks
  • I have driven over the enormous “Golden Gate” bridge in San Francisco
  • I have driven through Napa Valley in California and toured the champagne producer “Mumm”‘s vineyard.
  • I have flown ‘First Class’ with Lufthansa to South Africa
  • I have taken a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and Las Vegas strip.
  • I have visited the smallest desert in the world, “The Red Desert”, just outside Port Edward in Natal, South Africa.
  • I have seen the majestic Eiffel Tower and marvelled at its size.
  • I have photographed beautiful castles in the french Loire Valley.
  • I have driven most of the coast of southern Brittany.
  • I have bungee jumped/swung off the 120m high Oribi Gorge in South Africa.
  • I have watched a snake attack and eat a mouse.
  • I have swum in my clothes in the Connecticut River in America
  • I have seen the incredible Niagara Falls from the Canada side (wow!)
  • I have ridden a segway through the city of Richmond in Virginia AND through part of Indianapolis in Indiana.
  • I have visited the famous University of Virginia in Charlottsville
  • I have dipped my toe in the Mississippi River
  • I have been up the St Louis arch
  • I have visited Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland
  • I have watched an Olympic men’s football match (Olympics 2012 – Brazil vs Honduras quarter final)
  • I have travelled in an old fashioned paddleboat up the Mississippi
  • I have watched the 2012 major league baseball world champions play at their home ground (St Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St Louis) and received a tour of their stadium
  • I have seen travelled across the 21 mile bridge over Chesapeake Bay in Virginia
  • I have been on the spot where the Wrights brothers first flew their wooden airplane
  • I have been awed by museums in Washington DC
  • I have seen the White House
  • I have driven all over the south of in Iceland and seen some STUNNING waterfalls
  • I have done a boat ride through icebergs to see a gigantic glacier at Jökulsárlón in Iceland
  • I have toured around Dubai and seen the highest building in the world at the moment (829.84 m (2,723 ft) tall), the Burj Khalifa
  • I have drunk camel milk (yuk!)
  • I live on a tropical island (Koh Samui, Thailand)
  • I have drunk coconut water out of a fresh coconut
  • I have snorkelled off the islands of Koh Samui
  • I have jumped off a beautiful wooden sailing boat into the Gulf of Thailand
  • I have completed a TEFL course and currently teach English as a second language
  • I have seen an elephant in the middle of a Thai city (Hat Yai) (it even had a flashing red light on its tail)
  • I have been driven over the 7km bridge connecting mainland Malaysia with the small island of Penang
  • I have played Santa at a school where I taught and handed out sweets to 100s of kids shouting ‘Santa! Santa!’
  • I have had Christmas in Thailand (twice!)
  • I have done a sailing boat trip to the Angthong National Marine Park and viewed the gorgeous Emerald Lake
  • I have swum on the shores of Koh Phangan, Koh Samui’s neighbour
  • I have kayaked around the islands of the Angthong National Marine Park, between mainland Thailand and Koh Samui.

    Where do you get all the money to do all of the above.

      Hi there, thanks for your comment. First of all I feel I need to point out that this list covers my whole life and since I’m nearly 40, it’s a pretty long time.
      I’ve only been travelling seriously since last July when I gave up my job. I had worked a very long time MANY hours every day and because of this, didn’t have much life outside work so all the money went into savings.
      I also had no debt, no credit cards, no house or no car so my monthly outgoings were very little. All these factors allowed me to make the choices that I made by saving as much money as possible.
      Perhaps I need to do a blog post to explain to everyone – thanks for your question. Take care, Colleen
